Colorado is heaven on Earth. That sounds like an exaggeration, but if you’ve ever been to the Centennial State, you know it’s not.
This state has everything: world-class snow sports in the winter and bucket-list hikes for the summer. Olympic athletes even train here to take advantage of the lack of oxygen.
The list of what you can do in Colorado in the summer is endless. Here are some fun facts about what this state is like in the summer to get you pumped for your next Grand Lake trip.
1. It Seldom Gets Above 80 Degrees
Colorado summer weather is delightful in the mountains and near the foothills. Our highest temperature rarely goes above eighty degrees here in Grand Lake. In July and August, lower elevation towns (like Denver) experience temperatures in the mid-90s.
In fact, the average temperature for June, July, and August combined is a breezy 75 degrees during the day, with a temperature of about forty at night.
It’s the perfect place to spend your sunny summer days outside, then cuddle up in your Grand Lake lodging room at night.
2. We Have More Sunny Days Than the Sunshine State
You’ve heard Florida being called “The Sunshine State” your whole life. All the pictures of it are represented with sunny skies and sandy beaches. But did you know that Colorado has more sunny days per year than Florida?
According to the National Climatic Data Center, Florida gets around 101 sunny days a year. Colorado gets about 36 more than that. That’s five more full weeks (plus some) of Sunshine — with zero threat of hurricanes.
We’ll accept the new “Sunshine State” title whenever Florida wants to hand it over.
3. The Fishing Here is Wild… Literally
While you may get deep-sea fishing in Florida, Colorado has over 9,600 miles of streams and rivers ripe for fishing. That number doesn’t include the 2,800 plus lakes, including Grand Lake, either.
The most common fish in Grand Lake are Salmon (mackinaw lake trout and kokanee sockeye), that are found in the lake along with rainbow trout, brook trout, German brown trout, and cutthroat trout.
If you’ve never gone fly fishing, the rivers and streams around Grand Lake are a great place to start.
4. Grand Lake is the Largest Lake in Colorado
There’s a reason we call it “Grand Lake“. Our namesake lake is the largest lake, against both natural and artificial lakes, in Colorado. It’s over 400 feet deep (at its deepest parts) and has almost four miles of shoreline to play on and hike around.
Grand Lake’s beach area is family-friendly with a roped off swimming area for kids and tables for a picnic, and is a perfect place for non-motorized water sports like kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding and canoeing
